Former Rockland County Legislator John F. Meehan
Remembered For His Many Years Of Public Service

Credited With Construction of Modern County Jail, Establishing
Office For The Aging, Other Vital Programs

John F. Meehan, a three-term Rockland County Legislator known for championing  bipartisan  cooperation  and  advancing  key  services  for  seniors and  others,  passed away on Sept. 5 at age 84.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of former County Legislator Meehan and  also  acknowledge  his  contributions  to  bettering  county  services for our  residents,” Rockland County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr. said.

Meehan was elected to the County Legislature before the existence of the County Executive’s Office, a  time  when  the  county’s  population  was  steadily  booming  and  legislators  were  kept  busy establishing most of the vital services county residents still rely on today.

Elected  in  1973,  Meehan  is  credited  with  creating  important  programs,  including  the  Rockland County Office for the Aging, which led to the establishment of the County’s Meals on Wheels program and  the  Association  for  the  Visually Impaired,  among  others. He  also served  as  chair  of  the Legislature’s Jail and Sheriff’s Headquarters Construction Committee.

He  retired  in  1985  to  focus  on family  and  his  municipal  consulting  work,  shortly  after  ground  was broken on a new county Sheriff’s Headquarters and a new Jail.

A lifelong Suffern resident, Meehan also served multiple terms on the Suffern Village Board as trustee and deputy mayor, both before and after his time in the Legislature. He later volunteered with AARP Tax Aide, Meals on Wheels, and other nonprofits.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carole, their children, and grandchildren. To learn more about Meehan’s life and public service, please go here: http://bit.ly/45ZsqT9
