Summer Reading Program Aims To Keep Skills Fresh
Legislator Paul: ‘Reading And Books Are Lifelong Tools’
Rockland County Legislature Vice Chair Dr. Aney Paul recognized a group of engaged youth who completed her summer reading program during a special ceremony in the Legislative Chambers.
Students had to read at least five books and submit a description of each. Students were presented with a certificate in recognition of their commitment to reading and, by extension, to being lifelong learners.
“Reading and books are lifelong tools that serve as a passport to the larger world and allow the development of a richer self and a successful future,” Legislator Paul, herself an avid reader, said.
According to experts at the University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education, reading is always important, but in summer, it can matter even more because students’ reading abilities can drop significantly once school is out for the season. By reading throughout the summer, students can retain and even grow their reading abilities. Reading is necessary for learning, it exercises the brain, and it can improve concentration, literacy, and general knowledge.
