Legislature Proclaims May As Williams Syndrome Awareness Month In Rockland County
Legislator Malowitz: ‘Everyone Should Know Somebody Like This. It Will Make You More Open-Minded, Patient, Understanding And Truly Change Your Life For The Better’
May has been declared Williams Syndrome Awareness Month in Rockland County to help educate the public about the rare genetic condition while also showing support for the individuals who have it and their families.
“Despite the challenges Williams Syndrome can bring, the person living with the condition can still live a very full life, as I have seen with my cousin Dovi Zucker,” Rockland County Legislator Jesse Malowitz said.
Williams syndrome is a rare genetic condition characterized by unique physical features, delays in cognitive development and potential cardiovascular problems, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The condition occurs in an estimated 1 in every 10,000 births in the United States. While most of those born with the syndrome will enjoy a normal life expectancy, many typically face lifelong health, developmental and other issues, such as cardiovascular problems.
The challenges of Williams Syndrome often occur side by side with striking verbal abilities, highly social personalities, and an affinity for music, according to the Williams Syndrome Association.
Most people with Williams syndrome have not inherited the condition from a parent.
“Despite the challenges that come with Williams there are other characteristics as well, such as an outgoing personality, a happy disposition and an openness when engaging with other people,” Legislator Malowitz said. “Those are understatements when it comes to my cousin because in Stamford. Connecticut, where he lives, it’s hard to find people who don’t know him, especially in the Jewish community.”
One time, when Bobby Valentine, the former Mets manager, was running for mayor, he made sure to stop by Dovi’s home to meet the “famous” resident. Dovi is no stranger to Rockland County. Some of his favorite establishments are Wesley Kosher, The Hive, Pita Land, New City Bowl and Carvel, Legislator Malowitz said.
“This is not meant to diminish or trivialize the challenges that come with Williams Syndrome or other developmental disabilities, but I can’t stress enough that everyone should know somebody like this. It will make you more open-minded, patient, understanding and truly change your life for the better.”
The Proclamation, signed by Rockland County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr., states that “Raising awareness about Williams Syndrome is essential to fostering understanding, promoting early diagnosis, and supporting research efforts aimed at improving the quality of life for individuals affected by the condition.
“It is important to recognize the strengths and talents of individuals with Williams Syndrome, including their musical abilities, language skills, and innate social nature, which contribute to the diversity and richness of our communities. By fostering an inclusive society, we can provide individuals with Williams Syndrome the opportunities and support they need to lead fulfilling, empowered lives."
