Statement From Rockland County Legislature 2nd Vice Chair Phil Soskin On The Passing Of Former President Jimmy Carter

The following statement was made today at the Rockland County Legislature’s final 2024 meeting.

“On behalf of myself and the Rockland County Legislature, I extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of President Jimmy Carter, who accomplished so much for so many during his 100 years.

President Carter ‘worked his way up the ladder’ – valedictorian of his high school class, graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, devoted service in the Navy, Governor of Georgia and President of the United States.

All of these were incredible accomplishments, yet he may best be remembered for all he undertook in the 43 years after he left office. Building homes for families in need, monitoring international elections to help safeguard democracy, working to nearly eradicate Guinea worm disease in Africa, and despite his world stature, his return – time and again – to his family church in Plains to teach Sunday school.

President Carter had an unending love for his wife, Rosalynn, and he considered meeting, marrying and making a life with her to be the pinnacle of his life. Mrs. Carter felt the same about him. He had a deep love for his family and a devotion to his faith.

Through his deeds, President Carter showed us what it means to be of service to others. The United States and the world have lost a good, decent human being and surely our hearts are heavier for it.”
