Statement By Rockland County Legislator Toney L. Earl
Regarding False & Racist Attacks on Haitians
“Haitians have been coming to the United States for the same reason every other immigrant group has come. They seek a better life for themselves and their families, a good education for their children, a productive job and a safe place to live.
“This goes for the many Haitians who live in my district in Spring Valley, and the many newer arrivals in the state of Ohio, where I grew up and frequently visit. I am outraged by the false and racist comments made by the former President that Haitians in Ohio are eating the pets of residents there.
“This kind of statement is not only discriminatory, but potentially puts anyone of Haitian descent in possible danger from those who are mistakenly angry because they have been lied to. The former President does not get a ‘bye’ for this just because it’s his latest outrageous claim.
“I have spoken with numerous members of Spring Valley’s Haitian community, and they tell me they are deeply hurt by his remarks. They tell me they are angry. They tell me they have been made to feel as though they are less than other human beings because they are Haitian.
“I stand with my Haitian neighbors because I know of their many ongoing contributions and achievements. My neighbors are wonderful people and are just as important and valued as anyone else in the United States of America.”
