Former Rockland County Legislator Denis Troy Remembered For His Public Service
Served In County & Orangetown Elected Office 1996 Through 2021
The Rockland County Legislature acknowledges with sadness the passing of former County Legislator Denis Troy, who served one term on the Legislature and went on to devote more than two decades to public service on the Orangetown Town Board. He was 78.
“I have known Denis Troy since I was 16 years old,” Rockland County Legislator Thomas F. Diviny said. “He was my role model, fellow Councilman and most importantly my friend. I will miss him terribly and it saddens me to think that it took his death for many in this County to realize what an important and influential person he was for Rockland County.”
Troy served on the Rockland County Legislature from 1996 through 1999. After completing his term, he continued his commitment to local government when he was appointed in April 2000 to the Orangetown Town Board. He later won election to complete an unexpired term and was subsequently reelected, serving the Town of Orangetown through the end of 2021, including time as Deputy Town Supervisor.
Those who knew him best said that during his time in public office, Troy was known for his dedication to constituent service, his collaborative approach to governance, and his deep ties to the community. He was particularly active in the Irish community, including Division 3 of the Rockland County Ancient Order of Hibernians and greatly enjoyed the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Pearl River.
“Denis was a friend, mentor, and devoted community leader whose kindness left a lasting mark,” said Rockland County Legislator Raymond W. Sheridan III. “His steady presence, generous spirit, and willingness to serve made our town and county stronger. While I will miss his friendship and guidance, we should all strive to carry forward his example of compassion, integrity, and service.”
Mr. Troy is survived by his wife, Bea; his four children; nine grandchildren; and additional close relatives.
Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, at St. Aedan’s Roman Catholic Church in Pearl River. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 13, at St. Aedan’s Church.
